On the hunt for some hobbies? Then keep reading! (Stick around until the end for a list of budget friendly hobbies to try this year).

Everyone on the internet has been raving about hobbies. People are trying to find more meaning in their lives; they want to live, not just exist. Having hobbies and passions outside of work or education is known to boost wellbeing and improve mental health.

Nowadays, a lot of people have lost touch with their creative side, especially with the rise of social media. People are stuck on their phones, scrolling endlessly. We spend so much time consuming and so little time creating. Back in the day, most of our time was spent doing and creating things not just scrolling on TikTok or Instagram. Growing up, I remember spending more time making jewellery, creating dance choreography, singing in the choir, and building doll houses with friends. There was even a time I was learning how to play the guitar. But as I got older I kind of abandoned my hobbies. Now, in my free time, I just sit and scroll on social media. I’ve realised that spending so much time on social media doesn’t add much value to my life, it feels purposeless and empty.

Hobbies can help you tap into your creativity and live a more fulfilling life. They boost your sense of self and make you feel more productive. I truly believe we’re here to live, create, connect (with the world & people) and grow; hobbies help us do that. They help us discover & reconnect with ourselves and ease our mind & soul. Whether it’s learning a skill, creating something or just having fun and enjoying the experience, hobbies give you a sense of accomplishment and fulfilment.

So that’s why this year, I’ll be picking up more hobbies. I want to create, express myself through words & actions, try new activities and add more value to my life beyond work and education.

Want to start a hobby this year? Here are some affordable ideas!

Most of these can be done at home solo/with friends with a kit or a few basic items (this is usually more affordable than joining a class)

  • Knitting/Crocheting
  • Painting
  • Pottery painting
  • Jewellery making
  • Writing
  • Content creation
  • Baking/Cooking
  • Volunteering
  • Gardening
  • Running
  • Hiking
  • Playing Musical instruments
  • Reading
  • Dancing (joining a class might be more fun but doing it at home still works)
  • Roller skating
  • Vlogging
  • Photography

If you’ve been thinking about picking up a hobby this is your sign!
